Shoot! Won't be able to get the contrail pics 'till the end of next week. A brief description however....

June or so, 1997 around lunch time.

While traveling across the desert, we looked across the sky deep over the Tonopah Test Range. There were several contrails in circular patters and the first thought was dogfighting. There were eight to ten trails, but I will only describe three. These trails went around in a circular pattern, pretty much on the same level, suddenly one took a turn into the center of the circle, then within a fraction of a second, near instant I would call it, whatever produced the trail, stopped and reversed direction. The trail folded back in on itself. Needless to say this got everyones attention. More time was spent watching these vapor trails as once again they started to circle around. Then again, one suddenly cut into the circle and like a ball on a string bounced back, then a third. It gets even more odd. The source of the trail could not be seen. One could see a fairly sharp starting point, but even with a igh power scope no craft could be seen. As there were eight to ten trails, one would expect at least one visible craft, but none could be seen. Roughly 15 minutes after observing this, two fighter jets come up from behind a hill and passed close to us, 500' - 1000' repeatedly, I would guess in an effort to scare us away. They even passed over upside down at one point.

In my various conversations with contractors, it all boiled down to this.

For the past several years there have been highly maneuverable almost anti-gravity appearing craft being tested over Sandia/TTR. They appear invisible, not invisible like you can look through them, but ultra low observable and light distortive. To you they appear to not be there. And then the kicker which I heard on two seperate ocassions three years apart. "You probably have a picture of that".

It looks like N27RA went east to FXE on Sep-29 for maintenance I assume (although counter-espionage tasks are more exciting).


N20RA went east with the crew and is now returning. It would seem that using a Be1900 as a crew ferry over such a huge distance is somewhat odd; using a commercial 737 is quicker and presumably far more economical.

Not sure why both the 'Janet' BE1900s have been over to Florida for the weekend.... FXE is Fort Lauderdale executive I assume and both 20RA and 27RA are now westbound back to their normal hunting ground, both routing via Lakefront, LA.

TKM mystery solved


TKM appears on the ETMS system (used by flow control people in the USA) as an airport. The location of which is....Tonopah Test Range.

However, having watched N661BA en route back from STS to TKM today, it followed the flight plan precisely i.e. went past TKM inbound to BTY then turned left a bit at BTY on a direct track to Groom Lake, changed SSR code thus effectively engaging the cloaking device and became untrackable.

So although TKM is TTR airfield, it still represents traffic destined for Groom Lake in practice.
